Engine
Diagnostics.
Find the cause.

A warning light tells you something needs attention. Garrett’s Garage combines the information from your vehicle with hands-on testing to understand what needs repair and why.

Serving Hollywood and Southern Maryland. Every appointment is confirmed after review.

Read the clues.
Test the cause.

A diagnostic code describes a condition the vehicle detected. It does not automatically identify a failed part. A misfire, for example, may involve ignition, fuel delivery, air leaks, compression, or another mechanical problem. Replacing a component based only on a code can leave the original fault unresolved.

Diagnostics connects your symptoms with test results. It helps separate routine service needs from electrical or mechanical repairs, establish a sensible repair plan, and check whether completed work addressed the concern. Not every visit needs every test; the symptoms and first findings guide what comes next.

What should you look for?

Tell us when the problem happens: a cold start, after warming up, under acceleration, at idle, or only occasionally. Those details can help reproduce the concern.

01

Check-engine light

Stored codes, freeze-frame information, and live operating data provide a starting point. A code scan is one part of diagnosis.

02

Misfire, shaking, or rough idle

A cylinder that is not contributing properly can cause vibration or reduced power. Ignition, fueling, air supply, and engine condition may need checking.

03

Hard starting or stalling

Battery voltage, starting behavior, engine-speed signals, and fuel delivery can matter. Describe whether the engine cranks normally or does not turn over.

04

Power loss or changing fuel use

Hesitation, reduced acceleration, or an unusual change in consumption can have several causes. The driving conditions and service history help narrow the checks.

A flashing check-engine light or overheating needs prompt attention. Stop safely and arrange assistance rather than continuing to drive through severe symptoms. Tell us about warning lights and any recent repairs when contacting the shop.

Different tests.
Specific answers.

Different tests answer different questions. Depending on the vehicle and complaint, a diagnostic plan may include the following:

  • Scan data and code analysisUsed to understand what the vehicle detected, the conditions at the time, and sensor behavior while it runs.
  • Electrical and ignition checksUsed to assess power, grounds, wiring, spark plugs, coils, and related signals before condemning a component.
  • Fuel and intake testingUsed to investigate delivery problems, fuel control, and unwanted air entering the engine.
  • Compression and leak-down testingUsed to assess cylinder sealing and help locate mechanical leakage when engine condition is in question.
  • Cooling-system and internal inspectionPressure checks, combustion-leak checks, or a borescope may help investigate overheating, coolant loss, and possible internal faults.
  • Questions about your vehicle?Send the year, make, model, mileage, and requested work. We’ll review them before confirming an appointment.

Diagnostic background: Delphi on interpreting fault codes. The tests required depend on the vehicle and complaint.

Understand the concern.
Plan the work.

The goal is a supported explanation of the fault and a clear next step. Intermittent concerns may require more observation or testing.

  1. Understand your concern

Review symptoms, prior work, codes, and service history. Confirm when the problem happens and whether it can be reproduced safely.

  2. Choose targeted tests

Use initial observations and scan results to select the appropriate electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, or mechanical checks.

  3. Explain the findings

Discuss what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain, and any additional testing or repair needed. Agree on the next step before expanding the work.

  4. Verify after repair

When repairs are authorized and completed, check the original concern again. Clearing a warning light alone is not proof that its cause has been fixed.

Factory repair procedures and specifications vary by vehicle. Garrett's Garage uses the applicable service information for the exact vehicle and configuration. See the American Honda Service Information System for Honda's factory-authorized service-information program.

Focused experience.
Personal attention.

Garrett’s Honda and Acura experience connects scan information with the mechanical systems behind it. That background includes major engine work, which is useful when a running problem needs more than a parts replacement.

We use OEM or OEM-equivalent parts and take the vehicle's exact configuration into account. You can share previous diagnostic information, ask questions about the proposed work, and discuss the findings before moving forward.

The completed work and customer feedback below let you see that experience in practice.

A few common questions.

Can you diagnose the problem from a code I send?

A code and your description help us prepare, but they usually cannot confirm the repair remotely. Send the exact code and any prior test results rather than a parts recommendation alone.

What if the problem only happens sometimes?

Note the temperature, speed, engine load, and time since starting when it occurs. Photos, videos, and previous diagnostic reports can help; capture them only when safe. Further testing may be necessary if the issue cannot be reproduced.

Can you pick up and return my vehicle?

Pickup and drop-off are each $150 within 30 miles of the shop, subject to availability and confirmation. Request the option when contacting us; it is not guaranteed. Let us know if your vehicle cannot be driven safely.

What should I send with my request?

Include the year, make, model, engine if known, mileage, VIN, symptoms, and any diagnostic codes or prior inspection results. Appointment requests are reviewed before a date and time are confirmed.
