What the job involves
Two systems.
One critical purpose.
Both synchronize the crankshaft and camshaft so the valves operate at the right time relative to the pistons. A timing belt is a reinforced toothed belt with a scheduled replacement interval specified for the vehicle. It is different from the external accessory belt that drives components such as the alternator.
A timing chain uses metal links and normally runs inside the engine with oil lubrication. Many chain-equipped engines have no routine chain replacement interval, but chains, guides, tensioners, and variable valve timing components can still develop faults. Oil maintenance matters. Your engine determines which system you have; belts and chains are not interchangeable upgrades.

What should you look for?
A belt can reach its service deadline without making noise. Chain or timing-control problems may produce symptoms, but an inspection is needed to identify the cause.
Rattle or unusual engine noise
A new start-up rattle or persistent noise may involve tensioners, guides, a timing actuator, or another component. The sound alone does not confirm chain failure.
Check-engine light or rough running
Timing-related codes and poor running can involve mechanical timing, oil supply, actuators, sensors, or wiring. Testing helps distinguish them.
Stalling or failure to start
Loss of valve timing can prevent starting and may cause internal damage on some engines. A sudden change calls for diagnosis, not repeated starting attempts.
Timing maintenance is preventive work. Do not wait for a belt to make noise before following its replacement schedule. If the engine stops suddenly or develops severe mechanical noise, stop safely and arrange an inspection.

Is a timing chain good for the life of the vehicle?
A chain often has no scheduled replacement interval, but that does not make it immune to wear or related component failures. Follow oil-service requirements and have unusual noise or timing faults diagnosed.
Should the water pump be replaced with the timing belt?
On engines with a timing-belt-driven water pump, related work may share much of the labor. We can discuss the appropriate package, parts, and inspection findings for your engine.
Can you pick up and return my vehicle?
Pickup and drop-off are each $150 within 30 miles of the shop, subject to availability and confirmation. Request the option when contacting us; it is not guaranteed. Let us know if your vehicle cannot be driven safely.
What should I send with my request?
Include the year, make, model, engine if known, mileage, VIN, symptoms, and any diagnostic codes or prior inspection results. Appointment requests are reviewed before a date and time are confirmed.
