Transmission fluid service is maintenance; diagnosis and replacement address a problem. A drain and fill renews a portion of the fluid using the specification and procedure for the transmission. It is not a cure for worn internal parts, a damaged clutch, or every shifting concern.
Automatic transmissions, CVTs, manual gearboxes, and hybrid drive systems differ. Fluid type, level-check procedure, and service requirements depend on the exact unit. Garrett’s Garage offers transmission fluid drain-and-fill service and reviews transmission or clutch replacement needs with you before scheduling major work.

What should you look for?
A drivability change can come from the engine, transmission, clutch, mounts, or driveline. Inspection helps establish where the fault is before choosing the repair.
Slipping or unusual engine-speed changes
Engine speed rising without the expected acceleration can indicate a transmission or clutch issue. Normal CVT behavior differs from a stepped automatic.
Shudder, noise, or a warning light
Vibration and warning messages can have several causes. Describe the speed, gear, temperature, and load when the concern occurs.
Fluid leaks or service due
A leak needs its source identified. For scheduled fluid service, use the vehicle’s maintenance requirements and prior service records.

- Conventional automaticThe correct ATF and level procedure are specific to the transmission; a generic fluid recommendation is not enough.
- Continuously variable transmissionCVTs require the specified fluid and service method. A CVT is not serviced simply by substituting ordinary ATF.
- Manual transmission and clutchGearbox fluid service and clutch replacement are separate jobs. Clutch engagement concerns need their own assessment.
- Hybrid drive systemsHybrid transmissions can differ substantially from conventional automatics and belt-type CVTs. Contact us to confirm the requested work.

Check the relevant condition and diagnostic information. Where a fault is present, determine whether maintenance, further testing, or replacement planning is appropriate.
Perform the agreed work
For fluid service, use the applicable drain-and-fill and level-setting procedure. Transmission or clutch replacement is scoped separately with the required parts and related work.
Check the result
Check for leaks and verify operation as appropriate. Explain any remaining findings and document the service for the next maintenance interval.

Will changing the fluid fix a slipping transmission?
Not necessarily. Worn components and control faults need diagnosis. Fluid service should be recommended for its proper purpose, with realistic expectations about an existing problem.
Do you rebuild every type of transmission?
Contact us with the vehicle and required work. We offer fluid service and review transmission and clutch replacement requests; this page does not promise in-house rebuilding or support for every transmission type.
Can you pick up and return my vehicle?
Pickup and drop-off are each $150 within 30 miles of the shop, subject to availability and confirmation. Request the option when contacting us; it is not guaranteed. Let us know if your vehicle cannot be driven safely.
What should I send with my request?
Include the year, make, model, engine if known, mileage, VIN, symptoms, and any diagnostic codes or prior inspection results. Appointment requests are reviewed before a date and time are confirmed.
